The History of National Pet Week
The National Pet Week was first created in 1981 by the people of AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) and the Auxiliary to the AVMA. Since then, this furry week is always celebrated the first full week of the month of May.
National Pet Week is a special time dedicated to celebrating the more than 200 million pets in America who make our lives better every day. The week also serves as a reminder to promote responsible pet ownership throughout the year.
Each year, National Pet Week has a unique theme, and this year, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has announced daily themes to further highlight the occasion. National Pet Week is scheduled for May 7-13, 2023, and the daily themes are as follows:
- Sunday: Choose well: Commit for life
- Monday: Behavioral Health: Habits for happy pets!
- Tuesday: Nutrition and exercise matter
- Wednesday: Love your pet? See your vet!
- Thursday: Travel with care
- Friday: Emergencies happen: Be prepared
- Saturday: Plan for their care: Give them a lifetime of love
